While staying in a resort, an investigative journalist has a dream where he sees a woman being beaten to death. 中峇鲁—新加坡一个新旧交织，传统与现代互放异彩的小社区。故事，就发生在这里。 洪达明在中峇鲁长大、谋生，娶妻生子后也住在这里，这里有他太多的回忆。他和早年活跃歌台的“Ang Mo Kio姐妹花”之妹“小Ang Mo Kio”刘媚媚结婚。刘媚媚是个很会“居安思危”的人，用赚得的第一桶金顶下一间小咖啡店店面，以备不时之需。达明为人乐观豁达、不拘小节，因咖啡店和住家的门牌都是“118”号，故左邻右舍都叫他“118”或“要要发”，他也乐得“118！要要发！要发大家一起发”。他收养了早丧死党的一对子女，加上自生的一对子女，凑成“顺风顺水”、“金枝玉叶”。其中顺水和金枝是亲生子女，顺风和玉叶是好友所生。 “118”和妻子刘媚媚靠经营咖啡店为生，在中峇鲁一带可说无人不知，邻里有事，总来找他出面解决，他亦当仁不让。他们一家就住在咖啡店楼上的三房一厅战前组屋，夫妻二人加上四个孩子，六口之家本就拥挤，其中一房还租给了个叫“阿娘”的房客。这“阿娘”其实是个叫李伟良的中年男，曾经远赴法国学服装设计，但铩羽而归，沦落到“118”咖啡店来，靠卖母亲传下来的“阿娘肉粽”糊口。后来，刘媚媚的姐夫张天成生意失败，破产后走投无路，带了老婆“大Ang Mo Kio”刘洁洁和儿子前来投靠，加上“118”的妹妹洪姗姗在丈夫“失踪”后也带着个女儿来“暂住”几天，小小的屋子更是有人满之患。“118”是个凡事豁达、无所谓的人，心想若非走投无路，谁愿意寄人篱下？他宁可自己睡到咖啡店，让两个男孩当“厅长”，也不下逐客令。于是，大家“济济一堂”，“118”所住的“118”号屋子和“118”号咖啡店，遂发生了一起又一起的好事、坏事、趣事、糗事、怪事、妙事……
